چکیده

Water injection and Enhanced Geothermal System (EGS) technologies have been used to exploit heat resources from geothermal reservoirs. Detecting spatial temporal changes in reservoir physical properties is important for monitoring condition due water EGS. Here, we determine high-resolution models of the three-dimensional P wave velocity attenuation (Vp Qp) structures between years 2005 2011 northwestern part The Geysers field, California, using double-difference seismic tomography. northwest has a shallow normal temperature (NTR) underlain by high (HTR) that substantial underutilized but may be more fully utilized future through In southeastern Geysers, however, EGS successfully unintentionally applied at least 50 because waters injected into NTR flowing HTR. Our are well resolved this area show HTR different responses (seismicity, Vp, injection, which can explained injection-induced differences fracturing saturation likely related their geological properties. results indicate joint analysis seismicity, velocity, valuable characterizing conditions. suggest high-permeability zones and/or pre-existing permeable fault success potentially other systems.

Three-dimensional Compressional- and Shear-wave Seismic Velocity Models for the Southeast Geysers Geothermal Field, California

Three-dimensional compressionaland shear-wave velocity (“Vp” and “Vs,” respectively) structure is obtained for the SE Geysers geothermal area from microearthquake arrival-time data. The results indicate a region of high Vp and high Vs in the northwest portion of the area studied, and a low value of VpNs at depths corresponding to the upper part of the steam reservoir. The Vp and Vs anomalies ar...

Attenuation and velocity dispersion at seismic frequencies

Attenuation and velocity dispersion are strongly dependent on pore fluids, particularly partial gas saturation, and thus could become valuable direct hydrocarbon indicators. Unfortunately, application of these properties is not frequent due to incomplete understanding of the phenomena and lack of appropriate tools to extract the information. Laboratory measurements at frequencies and amplitudes...

Stress and Fracture Orientation in the Northwest Geysers Geothermal Field

A dataset comprised of 3946 well-located and wellconstrained earthquake focal plane mechanisms recorded in the Northwest Geysers geothermal field during the period of Jan 2005 – May 2012 was used to determine stress orientations and relative magnitudes at fine scale. The stress inversions were organized into gridblocks of varying size using a three-dimensional oct-tree gridding algorithm in whi...

The Stress State of the Northwest Geysers, California Geothermal Field, and Implications for Fault-Controlled Fluid Flow

A dataset comprised of well-constrained focal mechanisms for 6147 earthquakes recorded in the northwest Geysers geothermal field during the period of 2005–2012 was utilized to conduct a detailed stress study within and below the geothermal reservoir. The high-quality focal mechanisms were organized into grid blocks of varying size using a 3D octree gridding algorithm in which discretization was...

Seismic frequency measurement of velocity and attenuation

Velocity dispersion and attenuation in rocks are coupled properties that depend on the pore fluids and fluid flow. Attenuation shows a peak at high partial gas saturation. The amplitude of this peak increases with frequency. With full saturation, velocities rise but dispersion remains approximately constant. A substantial frequency shift occurs with decreasing permeability or fluid mobility. Th...
